Submissions
Eligibility
Double Exposure welcomes all opinions about film and media. Whether you are a student, professor, or community member, we endeavour to use our platform to make your voice heard.
We prioritize submissions from all undergraduate students of Columbia University (CC, SEAS, GS, BC), but welcome submissions from graduate students, professors from other institutions, and community members at large. If you are a high school student, we encourage you to submit to our essay contest.
Proposals
If this is your first time writing for Double Exposure, you should reach out to one of our editors whose work is similar to your interests. For proposals, please email the editor and CC the Double Exposure Editorial Board (doubleexposure@columbia.edu). We ask that you keep your proposal under 200 words with an outline for your ideas.
Pre-Written Work
Submissions should be in the form of a double-spaced Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or PDF document and include a Works Cited section. Please email the editor who best fits your work and CC the Double Exposure Editorial Board (doubleexposure@columbia.edu). Visual media is both permitted and encouraged in submissions. In the document, please also include the following information:
-
Your name
-
Current email address and phone number
-
School and year of graduation
-
Title
-
150-word abstract
If selected to continue, you should expect a longer editing process to ensure that the style and content of the submission meet our standards.
Frequently Asked Questions
I am not a film major, but I am still interested in submitting something to the Double Exposure Journal. Is that possible?
Absolutely! We accept submissions from students of all majors and concentrations.
Why was my submission rejected?
We reject articles that do not discuss film & media-related matters. Generally speaking, we look for quality, relevance, and substance, but we believe that there are many paths to creating a successful submission.
Do you give feedback on submissions that were rejected? Are resubmissions allowed?
We are unfortunately not able to offer feedback on individual submissions. If you are making a resubmission, we generally encourage you to first revise/modify the argument structure and writing so that it is not the exact submission that was previously sent to us.
What goes on behind the scenes in the selection process?
The Double Exposure Editorial Board reads all of the submitted materials and chooses pieces that best fit our mission. Each accepted submission is reviewed by an editor, who edits it for content, grammar, and stylistic consistency. The Double Exposure team works with the author to ensure a collaborative editing process.
My profile/the length of my submission don’t exactly fit into your criteria. However, I have a well-written and relevant submission. Would you be interested in publishing it?
Absolutely! If you would like to discuss your non-traditional piece for further clarity, reach out to us directly.
